Eligibility for Supplemental Security Income
To be eligible to receive SSI benefits, you must be unable to earn a living wage-meaning your individual or household income must be within certain parameters.
These are the common reasons individuals are unable to work:
- Physical disability
- Mental disorder
An ALJ will examine your medical records and determine whether you are capable of working. Attorney Brian Dowd has experience working for ALJs and has in depth insight into how these decisions are made.
How Supplemental Security Income differs from Social Security Disability Insurance
Unlike with Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), SSI benefits are not based upon an individuals work record and do not come out of the Social Security trust fund. SSI is financed through general government expenditures.
SSI benefits are for individuals who do not have a significant work record but who are nonetheless in need of and eligible for benefits based upon age or disability.
